Individualized Massachusetts Tutoring Lessons at the Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a unique kind of tutoring center. Other tutoring services use group settings to coach their clients, but we provide individualized attention by working with them one-on-one. We believe that every client arrives at the CLC with their own unique hurdles and educational goals. Our caring, patient environment nurtures all of our students irrespective of their stage of life (K-1through adulthood.)

No matter a student’s challenge, if they need help getting past a curriculum hurdle or have a learning disability, our programs and teaching approach is the ideal solution. Students with various learning challenges such as non-verbal learning disabilities, ADHD, executive function difficulties, dyslexia, and language-based learning disabilities come to us for tutoring services. Our educators are highly experienced, with advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

There are 4 primary areas we provide services for:

We Provide Educational Assessments

We believe in early intervention to help catch any learning difficulties and direct a student on the pathway to academic and life success. These evaluations can help change a student’s life by helping them grasp concepts that at one time eluded them.

All new students begin with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director during which their academic performance and history is reviewed. Once we learn a student’s strengths and weaknesses, we can offer a personalized education plan just for them.

Each student and parent receives a testing report following the evaluation which highlights spots that need improvement and which of our methods will remedy them.

Our Tutors Help Massachusetts Students With Reading

Reading well can be one of the toughest things for a young student to learn how to do. We help foster improved literacy skills in Massachusetts thanks to our selection of accredited programs that are proven to improve reading. Each of these can treat dyslexia and other problems that make reading challenging. Our reading programs include:

  • About Orton-Gillingham

This program is a great choice for learners who have a hard matching sounds with associated letters and who often pause when trying to get through a sentence. It’s a phonetically based program that shows students the basic building blocks of the English language and builds from there.

  • Wilson Reading System

Wilson is a 12-step reading and writing program that works well for students who have difficulty with spelling and find it tough to read words by themselves, without surrounding context. The steps are a bit more advanced than those from Orton-Gillingham and help students remember fundamentals through repeating concepts. Students read and review only what they have been taught previously before advancing to the next step which is part of what makes this a successful program.

  • About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also called LiPS, this program helps students who can not process individual sounds in words by showing them how to articulate words to then be able to write and read them. Specialists using this program show how the lips, mouth, and tongue can form certain letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

Learners develop mental images as they read and write because this program uses a visual approach to enable them to remember concepts. This enhances their scholastic ability across all types of study, not just reading and writing.

We Offer Math Tutoring Near Massachusetts

We tutor students of all ages and math skills to help them obtain their best math grades, whether they’re learning fundamental elementary school or high school mathematics. We have a number of math programs for all levels that help students “see” the solution visually. We show learners how writing down math formulas and solutions assists them in retaining what they’ve learned.

Our TouchMath program is a fantastic multisensory tool that reinforces mathematical principles by having children “touch” numbers to learn how to add, subtract, and multiply.

We Help Students From Massachusetts Prepare For All Exam Types

When Massachusetts students must face an exam for college or high school admittance, we help take the stress out of getting ready for it. We help students on a one-on-one basis prep for the MCAS, SAT, SSAT, PSAT exams, and more. We understand how to prepare students for the challenging questions in these exams because we’ve studied them ourselves.

We help mature students obtain more job opportunities by helping them study for the GED exam.

There’s Numerous Reasons in Massachusetts to Choose CLC Tutoring

We stand out by providing many convenient amenities such as ample parking at each of our locations. Our centers are modern and well-equipped with computers. We provide all students with private, quiet work areas so they can avoid being distracted.

All CLC instructors undergo background checks and we hire both part-time and full-time specialists. Our instructors have vast knowledge of and experience in supporting students with multisensory programs.

Some students may be eligible for financial aid with CLC. Siblings of clients qualify to receive a 10% discount on tuition. We do not lock our students into contracts; they simply visit the CLC as long as they need to.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Massachusetts Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.

About Massachusetts

Massachusetts is the most populous state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. The state is named after the Massachusetts tribe, which once inhabited the east side of the area, and is one of the original thirteen states. One of the original 13 colonies and one of the six New England states Massachusetts (officially called a commonwealth) is known for being the landing place of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. Massachusetts also has many historical sites from the American Revolution. You can follow Boston’s Freedom Trail back to the Revolutionary War period. Tourism has become an important factor in the economy of the state because of its numerous recreational areas and historical landmarks.
