Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) stands out from other tutoring centers. Unlike other organizations that tutor students in group settings, our educators support our clients one-on-one to provide the personalized attention they deserve. At the CLC our team believes that every student is unique with their own need and learning goals. From elementary school through adulthood, our students are given the assistance they really need in a patient, caring environment.

We’re the perfect solution for students who need a little extra help overcoming obstacles to those with learning disabilities. Our programs and teaching methods are designed to address clients with learning disabilities that include ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities. Our tutors are highly experienced, often holding advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

Here are the four main services we specialize in:

Your First Step at the CLC: Educational Evaluations/Assessments

Early intervention is crucial to help children do well in school and throughout the rest of their lives; that is why CLC offers educational evaluations to determine if a child has a learning disability and is suitable for a particular learning style. We can change a student’s life and help them comprehend concepts that were outside their understanding once an evaluation is done.

All new students begin with a no-cost consultation with our CLC director where their academic performance and background are reviewed. Once we find out a student’s strengths and weaknesses, we can offer an individualized teaching plan made specifically for them.

Each student and parent receives a testing report following the evaluation which highlights spots that need work and which of our methods will best help remedy them.

Our Peabody Reading Tutoring Program

Reading well can be among the hardest things for a young student to learn how to do. We help create stronger readers in the Peabody, MA area using a variety of accredited programs proven to boost reading skills. Each of these can treat dyslexia and other problems that make reading challenging. These include the following:

  • Orton-Gillingham

For kids who have difficulty matching sounds with associated letters and hesitate when reading a sentence, this program is an excellent solution. It is a phonetically based program that shows students the basic building blocks of the English language and builds from there.

  • The Wilson Reading System Program

This reading and writing program guides students who have a hard time with spelling through a 12-step process so they can eventually read standalone words. The steps go beyond the phonics of the Orton-Gillingham program and people retain what they gain from constant repetitiveness. Students read and review what they have been previously taught before advancing to the next step which makes this a successful program.

  • About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also called LiPS, this program helps students who are not able to process individual sounds in words by showing them how to speak words in order to write and read them. It teaches how the tongue, lips, and mouth form certain sounds which create letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

People develop mental images as they read and write because this program uses a visual approach to help them remember concepts. This approach to learning helps them succeed academically across many paths of study before reading and writing.

  • We Offer Math Tutoring Near Peabody

We tutor learners of all ages and math levels to help them attain their highest math grade, whether they’re learning fundamental elementary school or high school calculus. We implement a variety of math programs to help students at all levels grasp math by seeing the formulas and solutions. We show learners how writing down math formulas and solutions assists them in retaining what they’ve learned.

Children learn math more effectively when they see and “touch” numbers, which is why we use the TouchMath program to help them add, subtract, and multiply numerals.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Peabody Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
