Individualized North Carolina Tutoring Lessons at the Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a unique tutoring center in North Carolina. While other tutoring services often rely on group settings, we prioritize individualized attention by providing one-on-one tutoring. We understand that each client who comes to CLC has their own distinct challenges and educational goals. Our nurturing and patient environment supports students of all ages, from K-1 through adulthood.
Whether a student faces curriculum hurdles or has a learning disability, our programs and teaching approaches offer the perfect solution. We cater to students with various learning challenges, including non-verbal learning disabilities, ADHD, executive function difficulties, dyslexia, and language-based learning disabilities. Our highly experienced educators hold advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

There are 4 primary areas where we provide services:

We Provide Educational Assessments

We believe in early intervention to address any learning difficulties and guide students toward academic and life success. Our evaluations have the power to transform a student’s life by helping them grasp concepts that were once elusive.
Every new student begins with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, during which their academic performance and history are thoroughly reviewed. Once we identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses, we create a personalized education plan tailored specifically to their needs.

Following the evaluation, each student and parent receives a testing report that highlights areas requiring improvement and suggests appropriate methods to address them.

Our Tutors Help North Carolina Students With Reading

Developing strong reading skills can be a challenging task for young students. At CLC, we foster improved literacy skills in North Carolina through accredited programs that have a proven track record of enhancing reading abilities. These programs are particularly effective in addressing dyslexia and other difficulties that hinder reading proficiency. Our reading programs include:

  • About Orton-Gillingham

This program is an excellent choice for learners who struggle with associating sounds with letters and often face pauses when reading sentences. It follows a phonetically based approach, introducing students to the fundamental building blocks of the English language and gradually building upon them.

  • The Wilson Reading System

Wilson is a 12-step reading and writing program designed for students who struggle with spelling and find it challenging to read words without contextual support. The program builds on concepts introduced in Orton-Gillingham and reinforces fundamental skills through repetition. Students progress to the next step only after thoroughly mastering the previous one, making it a highly effective program.

  • The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also known as LiPS, this program assists students who struggle with processing individual sounds in words. It teaches them how to articulate words, enabling them to write and read effectively. Specialists using this program demonstrate the formation of certain letters and words using the lips, mouth, and tongue.

  • About Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

Through a visual approach, this program helps learners develop mental images while reading and writing. It enhances their overall academic abilities, extending beyond reading and writing skills.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Distinction?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that are often confused. Do they have the same meaning?
Yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were separate diagnoses. ADD in children was characterized by symptoms excluding hyperactivity, such as being withdrawn, spaced out, and struggling with focus and listening. On the other hand, ADHD in kids was associated with excessive energy, incessant talking, and hyperactive behavior.

However, today, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, regardless of hyperactivity. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nonetheless, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a child’s specific condition, aiming to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in North Carolina Kids

Contrary to popular belief, there is no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Instead, doctors rely on interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other adults who regularly interact with the child to assess symptoms and determine whether they align with ADD or ADHD. Diagnostic guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are utilized during the diagnosis process. Additionally, the child’s vision and hearing are checked, and a comprehensive physical exam is conducted to rule out any other medical conditions that may present similar symptoms to ADD and ADHD.
If a child is diagnosed with either condition, it is crucial to inform their educators, allowing them to provide appropriate support and recommendations to enhance the child’s focus in the classroom.
