Our 4 main areas of focus are as follows:

Your First Step at the CLC: Educational Assessments

At CLC, we believe in the importance of early intervention to help children succeed academically and in life. That’s why we offer educational assessments in Cornelius, NC that can identify learning challenges or effective learning styles. These assessments have the power to transform a student’s learning experience, making it enjoyable and effortless compared to previous struggles.
All new clients receive a free consultation with the CLC director, where we review their academic history and performance. By discovering each student’s strengths and challenges, we can create a personalized strategy that is tailored specifically to their needs. After the evaluation, both the student and parent receive a comprehensive testing report highlighting areas that require improvement and recommending the most effective methods to address them.

Our Cornelius Reading Tutoring Program

Learning to read can be challenging for young students, but at CLC in Cornelius, NC, we offer accredited programs that have proven to be effective in helping students become stronger readers. These programs are particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions that hinder reading, such as dyslexia. Our reading tutoring program includes the following options:

  • The Orton-Gillingham Program

Ideal for learners who struggle with matching sounds to letters and experience difficulty reading sentences fluently, this phonetically based program teaches students the fundamental building blocks of the English language and gradually builds upon them.

  • Wilson Reading System

This comprehensive reading and writing program guides students with spelling difficulties through a 12-step process, enabling them to read individual words with ease. The program emphasizes repetition to help students retain concepts before advancing to the next level.

  • Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Referred to as LiPS, this phonetically based program focuses on teaching students proper articulation of words before they begin writing. It emphasizes the correct use of lips, tongue, and mouth to form letters and words.

  • About The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program helps students develop mental imagery while reading and hearing words, strengthening their academic abilities across all subjects, not just reading and writing.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that are often confused. Many people wonder if they mean the same thing.
The answer is both yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were separate diagnoses. ADD in children referred to symptoms that did not include hyperactivity, but rather withdrawal, spaciness, and difficulty focusing and following instructions. On the other hand, ADHD in kids was characterized by excessive energy, excessive talking, and “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, whether or not the child is hyperactive. Attention deficit disorder in children falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a child’s specific condition to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Cornelius Kids

There is no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Instead, your child’s doctor in Cornelius, NC will conduct interviews with you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults regularly involved in their life. These interviews aim to determine if your child’s symptoms align with ADD or ADHD. Standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are used during the diagnosis process. Additionally, your child will undergo vision and hearing checks and receive a comprehensive physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that could be causing symptoms similar to those of ADD and ADHD.
If your child receives a diagnosis of either ADD or ADHD, it is important to inform their educators so that they can provide appropriate support and make recommendations to improve their focus in the classroom.
