Our educators are certified and experienced, with postgraduate degrees in special education, reading, and math.

Here are the four main services we specialize in:

We Provide Educational Assessments

Our specialists believe in early intervention to identify and address any learning difficulties, guiding students toward academic and personal success. Through evaluations, we empower students to overcome challenges and grasp concepts that were once elusive.
Every new student begins with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, who reviews their academic performance and history. By understanding each student’s strengths and areas of improvement, we create a personalized strategy tailored to their needs.

Following the evaluation, the student and their parents receive a testing report that identifies areas of difficulty and provides recommendations for suitable programs and methods.

Our Huntersville Reading Tutoring Program

Developing strong reading skills can be a significant challenge for young students. At CLC, we foster improved literacy skills in Huntersville, North Carolina, through our accredited programs that have a proven track record in enhancing reading abilities. Our programs cater to various conditions that make reading challenging, including dyslexia. They include the following:

  • About Orton-Gillingham

This program is ideal for learners who struggle with matching sounds to letters and face difficulties while reading sentences. It is a phonetically-based approach that teaches students the fundamental building blocks of the English language, gradually progressing to more advanced concepts.

  • The Wilson Reading System Program

Designed as a 12-step program, it is particularly beneficial for students who struggle with spelling and reading individual words outside of a sentence context. The program builds upon the principles of Orton-Gillingham, reinforcing concepts and ensuring a solid foundation for reading and writing success.

  • The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also known as LiPS, this program helps students who have difficulty processing individual sounds in words. It focuses on teaching them how to articulate words, enabling them to write and read effectively. The program emphasizes the formation of sounds using the lips, tongue, and mouth to create letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program helps students develop mental imagery as they hear and read words, enhancing their overall academic abilities in various subjects, not just reading and writing.

Math Tutoring in Huntersville, North Carolina

At CLC, we assist students in reaching their full potential in math by employing various teaching methods across all levels, from basic arithmetic to advanced pre-college math. Our unique math programs enable students to visualize formulas and solutions, enhancing their problem-solving skills. We emphasize the importance of writing down mathematical formulas and solutions to promote better retention and understanding.
Our TouchMath program is a valuable multisensory tool that reinforces mathematical concepts by engaging students in hands-on activities, allowing them to “touch” numbers while learning addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

ADD vs. ADHD: Understanding the Difference

ADD and ADHD are two terms that are often confused. Do they mean the same thing?
The answer is both yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were considered separate diagnoses. ADD was characterized by symptoms that did not include hyperactivity, with affected individuals appearing withdrawn, “spacey,” and struggling to focus and follow instructions. On the other hand, ADHD in children was defined by excessive energy, constant talking, and impulsive behavior.

Today, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for all behaviors indicating an inability to focus, whether or not hyperactivity is present. Therefore, attention deficit disorder in children falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, some healthcare professionals may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a child’s specific condition to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Huntersville, North Carolina

There is no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Instead, doctors rely on interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other adults involved in the child’s life to assess their symptoms. They follow standard guidelines from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) to make a diagnosis. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation, including vision and hearing checks, as well as a physical examination, is conducted to rule out any other underlying medical conditions that may contribute to similar symptoms.
If a child is diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD, it is essential to inform their educators, enabling them to provide appropriate support and recommendations to improve their focus and learning experience in the classroom.
