Commonwealth Learning Center Provides the North Reading MA Community With Personalized Tutoring Services

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) delivers many benefits that make it stand out from other tutoring centers. We work individually with each client to provide them with customized attention, unlike other tutoring centers that teach students in groups. We believe that every client comes to the CLC with their own personal challenges and learning goals. Our caring, supportive environment supports all of our students irrespective of their age (K-1through adulthood.)

No matter a student’s challenge, whether they need help getting over a curriculum hurdle or have a learning disability, our programs and teaching methodology are the ideal solution. Students with various learning challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, language-based learning disabilities, non-verbal learning disabilities, and executive function difficulties come to us for tutoring services. Our educators are certified and experienced with postgraduate degrees in special ed, reading, and math.

Our four main areas of focus are as follows:

Your First Step at the CLC: Educational Evaluations

We believe in early intervention to help catch any learning difficulties and direct a student on the pathway to academic and life success. We can alter a student’s life and help them grasp concepts that were outside their understanding once an evaluation is done.

We offer a free-of-charge consultation with the CLC director for all new clients that includes a review of previous exams and results. This helps us uncover a student’s strong points and vulnerabilities so we can design an individualized teaching plan just for them.

Each student and parent receives a testing report after the evaluation that highlights areas that need improvement and which of our methods will best help remedy them.

Reading Tutoring in North Reading

Literacy can be one of the hardest things a young student can master. We create stronger readers in the North Reading, MA area using various accredited programs proven to boost reading skills. Each of these can help manage dyslexia and other problems that make reading challenging. Our reading programs include:

  • About Orton-Gillingham

For people who are challenged in matching sounds with associated letters and pausing when reading a sentence, this program is an ideal solution. This program relies on phonic structure to show students the fundamentals of the English language and moves forward from there.

  • About The Wilson Reading System

This 12-step program is perfect for students who have a challenging time with spelling and reading individual words when they’re not being used in a sentence. The steps go beyond the phonics of the Orton-Gillingham program and students hold on to what they gain from constant repetitiveness. The program makes sure learners completely understand the current stage before progressing to the following one, which results in reading and writing success.

  • About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Referred to as LiPS, this phonetically based program enables students to learn how to speak words correctly before they actually write them. It teaches how the tongue, lips, and mouth form certain sounds which produce letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing®

People develop mental images as they read and write since this program uses a visual approach to help them remember concepts. This strengthens their academic capacity across all types of study, not just reading and writing.

  • We Help North Reading Students with Math Tutoring

From elementary math through advanced principles including calculus, we can help students be their best at the subject through various teaching methods. Our unique math programs help students of all levels “see” formulas and solutions to solve problems. We show students how writing down math formulas and solutions assists them in retaining what they’ve learned.

Children learn math better when they see and “touch” numbers, which is the reason we use the TouchMath program to help them add, subtract, and multiply numerals.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in North Reading Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
