Commonwealth Learning Center Offers Individualized Tutoring Services in Westwood, Massachusetts

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) stands out from other tutoring centers. We work with each client to supply them with individualized attention, in contrast to other tutoring centers that teach students in groups. At CLC our team believes that every client is unique with their own challenges and learning goals. From kindergarten through adulthood, our students are given the assistance they need in a patient, compassionate environment.

We’re the ideal solution for learners who need a little extra help overcoming hurdles to those with special needs. We work with clients who have ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities. Our tutors are highly experienced, with advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

Our four main areas of focus are as follows:

We Provide Educational Evaluations/Assessments

Our specialists believe in early intervention to help catch any learning difficulties and direct a student on the path to academic and life success. These evaluations can help transform a student’s life by allowing them to grasp concepts that had previously eluded them.

All new clients are given a free consultation with the CLC director that includes going over past academic history and performance. This helps us discover a student’s strengths and weaknesses so we can craft a personalized teaching plan just for them.

After the evaluation, the child and their parent will be provided with a testing report that pinpoints areas of difficulty and which programs and methods we recommend to remedy it.

Our Westwood Reading Tutoring Program

Learning how to read can be one of the toughest things for a young student to grasp. We work with students in the Westwood Massachusetts area to become stronger readers thanks to our many accredited programs that have been proven to help them master reading skills. All of them can treat conditions that inhibit reading, such as dyslexia. Some of our reading programs include:

  • Orton-Gillingham

For kids who are challenged in matching sounds with associated letters and pausing when reading a sentence, this program is an excellent solution. This program relies on phonic structure to show students the basics of the English language and advances from there.

  • About The Wilson Reading System

Wilson is a 12-step reading and writing method that works for people who have difficulty spelling words and find it tough to read words by themselves, without surrounding context. The steps go beyond the phonics of the Orton-Gillingham program and students retain what they learn from constant repetition. The program is successful because students study the current reading and writing concepts taught to make sure they can absorb them before the educator advances them to the next level.

  • About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also called LiPS, this program assists students who are not able to process individual sounds in words by showing them how to speak words in order to write and read them. It teaches how the lips, tongue, and mouth form certain sounds which create letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing®

This program helps students develop mental imagery as they hear and read words. Students in this program are able to succeed across many courses of study on top of reading and writing.

  • Math Tutoring in Westwood, Massachusetts

From basic math through advanced principles including calculus, we help students be their best at this subject through various teaching techniques. We offer a variety of math programs to assist students at all levels in grasping math by seeing the formulas and solutions. We also help students create a solutions book of math formulas that strengthen concepts they’ve learned.

Children learn math more effectively when they see and “touch” numbers, which is why we use the TouchMath program to assist them in adding, subtracting, and multiplying numerals.

Test Preparation in the Westwood Area

When Westwood MA students face an exam for college or high school admissions, we help take the tension out of getting ready for it. We support students with the PSAT, SSAT, MCAS, SAT tests, and more through our individualized approach. Our educators are well-versed in the types of questions presented in these tests and can coach students so that they’ll be prepared and fully confident.

We help mature students obtain more job opportunities by helping them study for the GED exam.

There are Many Reasons in Westwood Massachusetts to Choose CLC Tutoring

We stand apart by providing many convenient amenities like ample parking at each of our locations. Our facilities are modern and well-equipped with computers. We provide all students with private, undisturbed work areas so they can avoid being distracted.

All CLC educators undergo background checks and we hire both full-time and part-time specialists. Our specialists are educated in specialized multisensory programs.

In some cases, students may be entitled to financial aid for tutoring. Siblings of clients automatically receive a 10% discount on tuition. We do not lock our students into contracts; they keep visiting CLC for as long as they need to.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Westwood Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
