Commonwealth Learning Center Provides Personalized Tutoring Services in Weymouth, Massachusetts

At Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC), we offer a unique tutoring approach that distinguishes us from other educational centers. Unlike those relying on group instruction, we prioritize individualized attention through one-on-one sessions with our clients. Recognizing the distinct needs and learning objectives of each student, we foster a supportive and relaxed learning environment for individuals of all ages, from K-1 through adulthood.

Our services cater to a broad spectrum of students, whether they need additional support to overcome academic hurdles or face learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, or non-verbal learning disabilities. Our educators hold advanced degrees in special education, mathematics, and reading, along with certifications to effectively teach students with diverse learning needs.

Here are the four primary services we specialize in:

Educational Assessments at CLC

At CLC, we emphasize early intervention to empower students for academic and lifelong success. Our educational assessments play a pivotal role in identifying learning difficulties and facilitating a student’s journey toward grasping concepts that had previously proven elusive.

Every new student and their parents benefit from a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, during which we review past exams and results. This comprehensive understanding of a student’s strengths and weaknesses enables us to devise a tailored teaching plan tailored to their unique needs.

Following the assessment, we provide each student and their parents with a comprehensive testing report that pinpoints areas requiring improvement and suggests the programs and methods that are best suited to address them.

Reading Support for Weymouth Students

Mastering the art of reading can be a challenging endeavor for young students. In the Weymouth, MA area, we specialize in nurturing strong readers through a range of accredited programs proven to enhance reading skills. These programs are effective in addressing conditions such as dyslexia and other obstacles to reading fluency. Some of our prominent reading programs encompass:

  • Orton-Gillingham Approach

This program is particularly beneficial for students who may struggle with matching sounds to associated letters or experience pauses when reading sentences. It employs a phonetic foundation, imparting fundamental knowledge of the English language and building upon it.

  • Wilson Reading System

Designed as a 12-step program, the Wilson Reading System is well-suited for students grappling with spelling and reading individual words independently of context. Its emphasis on repetition ensures that students thoroughly internalize the material. Before progressing to the next step, students revisit and review previous lessons, contributing to its remarkable success.

  • LiPS Program (Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™)

Referred to as the LiPS program, it aids students who may struggle to process individual sounds within words. This program guides students in understanding how the articulation of lips, tongue, and mouth creates distinct sounds, forming the foundation of letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® program fosters mental imagery as students engage with written and spoken words. This innovative approach equips them with the skills necessary for academic success across various subjects beyond reading and writing.

  • Math Tutoring in the Weymouth Area

Our math tutoring covers a comprehensive range, from elementary mathematics to advanced concepts like calculus. We employ diverse teaching methods to help students excel in math. Our programs encourage students to visualize solutions and create their personalized math formula books, reinforcing their understanding of mathematical concepts.

The TouchMath program, a multisensory tool, enables students to interact with numbers physically, enhancing their abilities in addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

ADD vs. ADHD: Deciphering the Distinction

The terms ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are often sources of confusion. Do they refer to the same condition?

The answer is both yes and no. Historically, ADD in children was distinguished by symptoms lacking hyperactivity, characterized instead by withdrawal, spaciness, and difficulty focusing and following instructions. On the other hand, ADHD was associated with hyperactive behavior, excessive talking, and restlessness.

Contemporary understanding recognizes ADD as an outdated term, with ADHD serving as the medically recognized umbrella encompassing all behaviors indicative of an inability to focus, whether accompanied by hyperactivity or not. While professionals may use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition, the prevailing terminology is ADHD to avoid ambiguity.

Diagnosing ADHD and ADD in Weymouth Youth

Diagnosing ADHD or ADD involves a comprehensive assessment rather than a single test. Medical professionals conduct interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other regular contacts to gauge symptom alignment with ADHD or ADD. Diagnostic criteria from esteemed organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) inform the process. Additionally, vision and hearing assessments, coupled with a thorough physical examination, help exclude other conditions that may mimic ADHD or ADD symptoms.

For children diagnosed with either condition, communicating this to educators is essential to ensure they receive tailored support and recommendations to enhance their classroom focus.
