Distinguishing ADD vs ADHD: Clarifying the Difference

ADD and ADHD are terms often associated with confusion. Do they carry the same meaning?
The answer is both yes and no. In the past, ADD (

attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD refers to symptoms devoid of hyperactivity, often characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, difficulty concentrating, and challenges in following instructions. Conversely, ADHD in children encompasses heightened energy levels, excessive talking, and hyperactive behavior.
However, in a contemporary context, ADD is considered outdated, while ADHD serves as the recognized term encompassing behaviors indicative of an inability to focus, irrespective of hyperactivity presence. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls within the scope of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nevertheless, some medical professionals may opt for ADD or ADHD terminology to describe specific conditions, avoiding any potential confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in South Boston Children

When it comes to diagnosing ADD or ADHD, a single test does not exist. Instead, your child’s physician engages in interviews with you, your child’s teachers, family members, and other adults regularly interacting with them. This evaluation process aims to gauge symptoms against the criteria for ADD or ADHD. The diagnosis adheres to established guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Furthermore, your child undergoes vision and hearing assessments, alongside a comprehensive physical examination, to rule out other medical conditions that might exhibit symptoms akin to ADD and ADHD.
In cases where your child receives an ADD or ADHD diagnosis, it is vital to inform their educators. This ensures tailored support and recommendations to enhance their focus within the classroom setting.
