Customized Newton Massachusetts Tutoring with the Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a unique type of tutoring center. We work separately with each client one-on-one to provide them with personalized attention, in contrast to other tutoring centers that instruct students in groups. At the CLC our team believes that every student is one-of-a-kind with their own need and learning goals. From elementary school through adulthood, our students receive the assistance they require in a patient, compassionate environment.

We work with learners of all abilities, whether they need a little bonus homework help or are challenged with a learning disability. Students with many types of learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities come to us for support. Our educators are certified and experienced with postgraduate degrees in special education, reading, and math.

Our four main areas of focus are as follows:

We Provide Educational Evaluations/Assessments

We believe in early intervention to help catch any learning difficulties and direct a student on the pathway to academic and life success. Our assessments can help change a student’s life by making it fun and easy for them to learn where previously they struggled.

We offer a free-of-charge consultation with the CLC director for all new students which includes a review of past exams and results. This helps us discover a student’s strengths and vulnerabilities so we can craft an individualized teaching plan specifically for them.

Following the evaluation, the learner and their parent will be provided with a testing report that identifies areas of difficulty and which programs and methods we recommend to remedy them.

Reading Tutoring in Newton

Reading well can be one of the toughest things for a young student to learn how to do. We help foster better literacy skills in Newton MA thanks to our selection of accredited programs that are proven to improve reading. All of them can treat conditions that inhibit reading, such as dyslexia. These include the following:

  • Orton-Gillingham

For kids who are challenged in matching sounds with associated letters and pausing when reading a sentence, this program is an excellent solution. This program relies on phonic structure to show students the basics of the English language and advances from there.

  • Wilson Reading System

Wilson is a 12-step reading and writing method that works for students who have difficulty with spelling and find it hard to read words by themselves, without surrounding context. The steps of this program are a bit more involved than Orton-Gillingham and stress repetition to help students remember what they’ve just earned. The program ensures learners completely understand the current level before progressing to the following one, which leads to reading and writing success.

  • Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also called LiPS, this is a strong phonetic program for learners who cannot process distinct sounds, or phonemes, within spoken words. It shows students how proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth creates the basics of letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program helps students cultivate mental imagery as they read and hear words. This approach to learning enables them to succeed academically across many courses of study before reading and writing.

  • We Help Newton Students with Math Tutoring

We tutor people of all ages and math levels to help them attain their best math grades, whether they’re learning grade school math or high school mathematics. We implement a variety of math programs to assist students at all levels in comprehending math by seeing the formulas. In addition, we help students create a solutions manual of math formulas that reinforces concepts they have learned.

For younger learners, our TouchMath program uses a multisensory method that teaches kids to count and touch TouchPoints to add, subtract, and multiply numbers.

We Help Students From Newton, MA Get Ready For All Exam Types

When Newton MA students face an exam for college or high school admissions, we help take the stress out of getting ready for it. We help students on a one-on-one basis prepare for the SAT, PSAT, SSAT, MCAS exams, and more. Our educators are knowledgeable in the types of questions presented in these tests and can coach learners to ensure that they’ll be prepared and ready to succeed.

We help mature students obtain more job opportunities by helping them study for the GED exam.

CLC Tutoring Delivers Many Client Advantages in Newton MA

In addition to our one-on-one approach, clients will find plenty of parking at both of our locations. r centers offer the most modern computer models and equipment in a modern setting. All students have access to private work areas so they will not be interrupted.

A safe teaching environment is one of our top priorities which is why all CLC staff must undergo a strict background check. Multisensory programs are one of our specialties.

Some students may be eligible for financial aid with CLC. If a client has a sibling, they receive a 10% tuition discount. We don’t lock our students into contracts; they simply visit the CLC as long as they need to.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Newton Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
