Personalized Marblehead Massachusetts Tutoring Lessons by Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a unique type of tutoring center. As opposed to other centers that tutor learners in group settings, our educators work with our clients one-on-one to provide the tailored attention they need. At CLC we realise that every student has their own challenges and learning goals that makes them and their situation unique. We support students of all ages (K-1 through adult) in a compassionate, relaxing setting.

We work with learners of all capabilities, regardless if they need a little bonus homework help or are challenged with a learning disability. We work with clients who have dyslexia, ADHD, language-based learning disabilities, non-verbal learning disabilities, and executive function difficulties. Our tutors are highly experienced, with advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

Our 4 main areas of focus are the following:

Your First Step at the CLC: Educational Evaluations/Assessments

Early intervention is crucial to help a child do well in school and throughout the rest of their life; that’s why CLC offers educational assessments to help determine if a student has a learning disability and better suited for a particular learning style. These assessments can help transform a student’s life by helping them grasp concepts that had previously alluded them.

All new clients are given a free consultation with the CLC director that includes examining past academic history and performance. This helps us uncover a student’s strong points and vulnerabilities so we can design an individualized teaching plan specificially for them.

Post-evaluation, we review a testing report with each student and their parent that clarifies areas that need support and which of our programs we feel will be most beneficial.

Our Marblehead Reading Tutoring Program

Literacy may be one of the trickiest things a young student can master. We help students in the Marblehead Massachusetts area become stronger readers thanks to our many accredited programs that have been proven to hep master reading skills. All of them can treat conditions that inhibit reading, such as dyslexia. Some of our reading programs include:

  • Orton-Gillingham

This program assists students who may pause when attempting to read through a sentence and find it difficult to match sounds with associated letters. This phonetically based program helps students understand the basic ingredients of English before gently advancing them.

  • Wilson Reading System

This reading and writing program guides students who struggle with spelling through a 12-step process so they can eventually read standalone words. The steps of this program are a little more involved than Orton-Gillingham and stress repetition to help students remember what they’ve just earned. The program makes sure students fully understand their current level before moving on to the next one, which leads to reading and writing success.

  • The LiPS Program

Also called LiPS, this program assists students who are not able to process individual sounds in words by showing them how to articulate words to then be able to write and read them. It demonstrates to students how proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth form the basics of letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing®

This program helps students develop mental imagery as they hear and read words. This form of learning helps them succeed academically across many paths of study before reading and writing.

  • We Offer Math Tutoring Near Marblehead

We tutor people of all ages and math skill to help them achieve their best math grade, whether it’s learning basic elementary school math or high school mathematics. We have a number of math programs for all levels that help students “see” the solution visually. We show learners how writing down math formulas and solutions enables them to retain what they’ve learned.

For younger learners, our TouchMath program uses a multisensory method that teaches kids to count and touch TouchPoints to add, subtract, and multiply numerals.

Our educators are knowledgeable in the styles of questions presented in these tests and can coach students to ensure that they’ll be prepared and ready to succeed.

We also help adult clients get ready for their GED exam so they can attain high school completion, opening up more job possibilities.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Marblehead Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
