Springfield, MA Benefits from Tailored Tutoring Services at Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) stands out among tutoring centers, offering a host of unique advantages. In contrast to group instruction, our tutors engage one-on-one with each student, ensuring personalized support. At CLC, we acknowledge the individual challenges and learning objectives of every student. Our nurturing and encouraging environment caters to learners of all ages, spanning from kindergarten to adulthood, regardless of their life stage.

We cater to students of all skill levels, whether they require assistance with assignments or contend with learning disabilities. Our expertise lies in aiding students with various learning obstacles, including ADHD, dyslexia, executive function hurdles, language-based learning difficulties, and non-verbal learning disabilities. Our instructors hold advanced degrees in special education, mathematics, and reading, and they are certified to teach learners with diverse requirements.

We Prioritize Four Main Areas:

Educational Assessments are Our Specialty

At CLC, we believe in the importance of early intervention to set students up for success in both school and life. This is why we offer educational evaluations that can identify learning difficulties or effective learning styles. These assessments have the potential to transform a student’s life by enabling them to grasp concepts that may have eluded them previously.

Every new student embarks on their journey with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, during which we assess their academic performance and background. Understanding each student’s strengths and weaknesses allows us to create a personalized approach tailored specifically to their needs.

Following the evaluation, students and their parents receive a comprehensive testing report that pinpoints areas of difficulty and recommends suitable programs and methods for their unique situation.

Springfield’s Reading Tutoring Program

Mastering literacy can be a formidable challenge for young learners. At CLC, we promote improved reading skills in Springfield, MA, through a selection of accredited programs proven to enhance reading abilities, even for those affected by dyslexia. Our reading programs encompass:

  • The Orton-Gillingham Program

This program proves excellent for learners who struggle to associate sounds with corresponding letters and often experience pauses while reading sentences. It follows a phonetically-based approach that teaches students the foundational elements of the English language and builds upon them.

  • The Wilson Reading System Program

Designed for students grappling with spelling challenges, this reading and writing program guides them through a 12-step process that enables them to read individual words progressively. The program goes beyond phonics, with students reinforcing their learning through repetitive practice. Regular reviews ensure that students retain concepts before moving on to the next level.

  • The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program (LiPS)

LiPS assists students who have difficulty processing individual sounds in words by teaching them how to articulate words, thereby improving their ability to read and write. By understanding how the proper use of lips, tongue, and mouth creates the building blocks of letters and words, students develop essential skills.

  • The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program employs a visual approach to help learners develop mental images while reading and writing. By visualizing concepts, students can enhance their understanding and retention of information. The benefits extend beyond reading and writing, as this program enhances success across various areas of study.

Math Tutoring in Springfield, Massachusetts

We assist students in reaching their mathematical potential by employing various teaching strategies across all levels, from basic arithmetic to advanced pre-college math. Our unique math programs help students “see” formulas and solutions, empowering them to solve problems effectively. We emphasize the importance of documenting math formulas and solutions as a method to reinforce understanding.

Children grasp mathematical concepts more effectively when they can visualize and interact with numbers. That’s why we implement the TouchMath program, enabling students to add, subtract, and multiply numerals by incorporating tactile elements.

ADD vs. ADHD: Is There a Distinction?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that can be confusing. Do they mean the same thing?

The answer is both yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD referred to symptoms that did not include hyperactivity, often characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, difficulty focusing, and challenges with listening to instructions. On the other hand, ADHD in children was defined by high energy levels, excessive talking, and hyperactive behavior.

However, in contemporary usage, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, regardless of the presence of hyperactivity. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nevertheless, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Springfield Kids

When it comes to diagnosing ADD or ADHD, there is no single test. Instead, your child’s doctor will conduct interviews with you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults who interact with them regularly to evaluate their symptoms and determine if they align with the criteria for ADD or ADHD. Standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are used during the diagnosis process. Additionally, your child will undergo vision and hearing tests, as well as a comprehensive physical examination, to rule out any other medical conditions that may present symptoms similar to those of ADD and ADHD.

If your child receives a diagnosis of either ADD or ADHD, it is important to inform their educators so that they can provide appropriate support and make recommendations to improve their focus in the classroom.
