Deciphering ADD vs. ADHD: Grasping the Distinction

ADD and ADHD often induce confusion. Are they synonymous?
Yes and no. Historically, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were separate diagnoses. ADD referred to symptoms characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, and difficulty focusing and following instructions, devoid of hyperactivity. In contrast, ADHD in children encompassed excessive energy, incessant talking, and hyperactive behavior.

Contemporary understanding regards ADD as outdated, with ADHD as the recognized term encompassing any focus-related challenge, irrespective of hyperactivity. Consequently, attention deficit disorder in children falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Some medical professionals may still employ ADD or ADHD to precisely describe a child’s condition, avoiding ambiguity.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in North Providence Youth

No solitary test exists to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Instead, doctors rely on interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other individuals closely involved in the child’s life to assess symptoms. Established guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) guide the diagnosis. Additionally, visual and auditory checks and a comprehensive physical examination are conducted to eliminate other medical conditions with similar symptoms.

Should your child receive an ADD or ADHD diagnosis, it’s vital to inform their educators, enabling them to provide appropriate support and offer strategies to enhance focus within the classroom.
