Educational Assessments

We strongly believe in early intervention to help students succeed academically and in life. Our assessments transform the learning experience, making it enjoyable and easier for students who previously struggled.
Each new student undergoes a free consultation with our CLC director, who reviews their academic performance and history. Understanding each student’s strengths and challenges allows us to create a personalized strategy for their educational journey.

Following the evaluation, the student and their family receive a detailed testing report highlighting areas of difficulty and our recommended programs and methods tailored to their specific needs.

Reading Tutoring in Lakewood, CO

Learning to read can be a significant challenge for young students. At CLC, we help students in the Lakewood, Colorado area become proficient readers through our accredited programs designed to master reading skills. These programs address various conditions that hinder reading, such as dyslexia. Our reading programs include:

  • Orton-Gillingham

This program assists students who struggle to match sounds with associated letters, often pausing when reading sentences. By focusing on phonetics, this program helps students recognize the fundamental components of the English language before gradually advancing their skills.

  • Wilson Reading System

The Wilson Reading System is a comprehensive reading and writing program that guides students with spelling difficulties through a 12-step process, enabling them to read individual words over time. The program builds upon the concepts of Orton-Gillingham and ensures students thoroughly understand each stage before progressing, resulting in reading and writing success.

  • The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program (LiPS)

Also known as LiPS, this program is highly effective for learners who struggle to process distinct sounds or phonemes within spoken words. It teaches students how proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth forms the foundation of letters and words.

  • The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program employs a visual approach, allowing students to develop mental images while reading and writing. By enhancing visualization skills, students can succeed in various subjects in addition to reading and writing.

ADD vs. ADHD: Understanding the Difference

ADD and ADHD are two terms that often cause confusion. Do they mean the same thing?
yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were separate diagnoses. ADD refers to symptoms characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, and difficulty focusing and listening to instructions, without hyperactivity. On the other hand, ADHD in children was defined by excessive energy, incessant talking, and hyperactive behavior.

Today, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, with or without hyperactivity. Thus, attention deficit disorder in children falls under attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition, aiming to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Lakewood Kids

There is no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Instead, doctors rely on interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other adults regularly involved in the child’s life to assess symptoms. Standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are used for making the diagnosis. Additionally, vision and hearing checks and a thorough physical examination are conducted to rule out other medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms.
If your child receives a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD, it’s crucial to inform their educators so they can provide appropriate support and make recommendations to improve their focus in the classroom.
