Tailored Tutoring Services in Holyoke, Massachusetts at Commonwealth Learning Center

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) distinguishes itself among tutoring centers by providing individualized one-on-one attention to each client. Unlike other tutoring centers that offer group instruction, we believe in tailoring our approach to address the unique challenges and learning goals of every client, from elementary school students to adults, in a patient and caring atmosphere.

We are well-equipped to assist individuals who require additional support, whether they are overcoming obstacles or dealing with specific learning disabilities. Our specialized programs and teaching methods are designed to aid clients with a range of learning difficulties, including non-verbal learning disabilities, language-based learning disabilities, executive function challenges, dyslexia, and ADHD. Our instructors, holding advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading, bring their expertise to cater to diverse learning needs.

Our Focus Areas Revolve Around Four Key Aspects:

First Step: Educational Evaluations at CLC

We firmly believe in early intervention to ensure a child’s success in school and life. CLC offers educational assessments that can unveil learning challenges or effective learning styles. These assessments have the power to transform a student’s learning experience, making it enjoyable and accessible.

Each new client undergoes a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, where we delve into their academic history and performance. Understanding each client’s strengths and areas of improvement enables us to craft a personalized strategy tailored to their unique needs.

Following the evaluation, both the student and their parent receive a comprehensive testing report that identifies areas in need of improvement and recommends the most suitable programs and methods for addressing them.

Our Holyoke Reading Tutoring Program

Mastering reading skills can be a formidable challenge for young learners, and Holyoke, Massachusetts, benefits from our accredited programs designed to enhance reading proficiency. Our programs are effective even for individuals facing hurdles like dyslexia. These programs encompass:

  • The Orton-Gillingham Program

This program proves beneficial for learners who struggle to connect sounds with corresponding letters and often encounter pauses while reading sentences. It follows a phonetically-based approach, teaching students the fundamental elements of the English language and building on that foundation.

  • The Wilson Reading System Program

Designed for students with spelling difficulties, this reading and writing program guides them through a 12-step process to read individual words over time. The program emphasizes repetition to ensure students grasp and retain concepts before advancing to the next level.

  • The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program (LiPS)

LiPS assists students who have difficulty processing individual sounds in words by teaching them proper articulation and improving their ability to read and write. It underscores the significance of understanding how the lips, tongue, and mouth contribute to forming letters and words.

  • The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program employs a visual approach to help learners develop mental imagery while reading and hearing words. This enhancement extends beyond reading and writing, benefiting various areas of study.

Math Tutoring in Holyoke, Massachusetts

We empower students to reach their mathematical potential by employing diverse teaching strategies, spanning from basic arithmetic to advanced concepts like calculus. Our math programs, suitable for all levels, encourage students to visualize formulas and solutions, aiding effective problem-solving. We stress the importance of documenting math concepts in a personalized math solutions book, reinforcing understanding.

For younger students, our TouchMath program adopts a multisensory approach, teaching them to count and manipulate numbers using TouchPoints for addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Test Preparation for Holyoke Students

Recognizing the anxiety that accompanies exams, particularly those required for college or private high school admissions, CLC offers one-on-one test preparation. Whether preparing for the PSAT, SSAT, MCAS, SAT, or other exams, our tutors are well-versed in tackling challenging questions, having extensively studied them.

We also support adult clients in their GED exam preparation, offering them opportunities to enhance job prospects and officially complete high school.

ADD vs. ADHD: Is There a Distinction?

ADD and ADHD are terms that can be easily confused. Do they mean the same thing?

The answer is both yes and no. In the past, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD referred to symptoms that did not include hyperactivity, often characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, difficulty focusing, and challenges with listening to instructions. On the other hand, ADHD in children was defined by high energy levels, excessive talking, and hyperactive behavior.

However, in contemporary usage, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, regardless of the presence of hyperactivity. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nevertheless, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Holyoke Kids

When it comes to diagnosing ADD or ADHD, there is no single test. Instead, your child’s doctor will conduct interviews with you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults who interact with them regularly to evaluate their symptoms and determine if they align with the criteria for ADD or ADHD. Standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are used during the diagnosis process. Additionally, your child will undergo vision and hearing tests, as well as a comprehensive physical examination, to rule out any other medical conditions that may present symptoms similar to those of ADD and ADHD.

If your child receives a diagnosis of either ADD or ADHD, it is important to inform their educators so that they can provide appropriate support and make recommendations to improve their focus in the classroom.
