Commonwealth Learning Center Supports the Fort Collins CO Area With Individualized Tutoring Services

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) provides a range of unique advantages that distinguish it from other tutoring centers. Unlike facilities that offer group instruction, our educators work one-on-one with each client, ensuring personalized attention. At CLC, we recognize that every student brings their own set of challenges and learning goals. Our nurturing and supportive environment caters to students of all ages, from kindergarten through adulthood, regardless of their stage in life.
We cater to students of all abilities, whether they require assistance with homework or face learning disabilities. We specialize in helping students with various learning challenges, including ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities. Our instructors hold advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading, and they are certified to teach learners with diverse needs.

Here are the four main areas we focus on:

We Provide Educational Assessments

At CLC, we believe in the importance of early intervention to set children up for success in school and life. That’s why we offer educational assessments that help identify learning difficulties or effective learning styles. These evaluations have the power to transform a student’s life by enabling them to grasp concepts that previously eluded them.
Every new student begins with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director, where we review their academic performance and background. Understanding each student’s strengths and weaknesses allows us to create a personalized approach tailored specifically to their needs.
Following the evaluation, the student and their parent will receive a testing report that identifies areas of difficulty and recommends suitable programs and methods for their unique situation.

Our Fort Collins Reading Tutoring Program

Mastering literacy can be a challenging task for young students. At CLC, we foster improved reading skills in Fort Collins, CO, through a selection of accredited programs that have proven to enhance reading abilities, including those affected by dyslexia. Our reading programs include:

  • About Orton-Gillingham

This program is an excellent choice for learners who struggle to associate sounds with corresponding letters and often encounter pauses while reading sentences. It follows a phonetically-based approach that teaches students the foundational elements of the English language and builds upon them.

  • The Wilson Reading System Program

Designed for students who struggle with spelling, this reading and writing program guides them through a 12-step process that enables them to read individual words over time. The program goes beyond phonics, and students reinforce their learning through repetitive practice. Regular review ensures students retain the concepts before progressing to the next level.

  • Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also known as LiPS, this program helps students who have difficulty processing individual sounds in words by teaching them how to articulate words, which in turn improves their ability to read and write. By understanding how proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth creates the building blocks of letters and words, students develop essential skills.

  • About The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

This program employs a visual approach to help learners develop mental images while reading and writing. By visualizing concepts, students can improve their understanding and retention of information. The benefits of this program extend beyond reading and writing, as it enhances success across various areas of study.

Math Tutoring in Fort Collins, Colorado

We assist students in achieving their mathematical potential by employing a variety of teaching strategies across all levels, from basic arithmetic to advanced pre-college math. Our unique math programs help students “see” formulas and solutions, enabling them to solve problems effectively. We emphasize the importance of writing down math formulas and solutions as a method to reinforce understanding.
Children grasp mathematical concepts better when they can visualize and engage with numbers. That’s why we utilize the TouchMath program, which enables students to add, subtract, and multiply numerals by incorporating tactile elements.

ADD vs. ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that often cause confusion. Do they mean the same thing?
The answer is both yes and no. Previously, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were separate diagnoses. ADD referred to symptoms that did not include hyperactivity, often characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, difficulty focusing, and challenges with listening to instructions. On the other hand, ADHD in children was defined by high energy levels, excessive talking, and hyperactive behavior.
However, in contemporary usage, ADD is considered an outdated term, and ADHD is the recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, regardless of the presence of hyperactivity. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nevertheless, some doctors may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition in order to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Fort Collins Kids

When it comes to diagnosing ADD or ADHD, there is no single test. Instead, your child’s doctor will conduct interviews with you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults who interact with them regularly to evaluate their symptoms and determine if they align with the criteria for ADD or ADHD. Standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are used during the diagnosis process. Additionally, your child will undergo vision and hearing tests, as well as a comprehensive physical examination, to rule out any other medical conditions that may present symptoms similar to those of ADD and ADHD.
If your child receives a diagnosis of either ADD or ADHD, it is important to inform their educators so that they can provide appropriate support and make recommendations to improve their focus in the classroom.
